All You Need To Know About Cosmeceuticals

We’re big believers in the power of cosmeceuticals. So much so that skinstitut products are full of these hard-working complexion perfectors. Let us explain…

What are Cosmeceuticals?

The term ‘cosmeceutical’ was introduced by dermatologist Dr Albert Kligman and is a hybrid of the words ‘cosmetic’ and ‘pharmaceutical’.  Essentially it’s a term to broadly describe skincare products that contain active ingredients and that sit somewhere between cosmetics and prescription products.

What do Cosmeceuticals Do?

Cosmeceuticals create change in the skin. Depending on the type of ingredients they feature, they can do anything from help to repair and protect against the effects of environmental damage on the skin’s barrier, speed up cellular turnover to maintain the skin’s natural process of renewal (desquamation), and inhibit melanin production to lighten and brighten skin tone.

What Kind of Ingredients are in Cosmeceuticals?

Here are just a few of the key ingredients you will find in cosmeceutical skincare:

  • Retinoids (Vitamin A)

  • Hydroxy Acids (AHAs, BHAs)

  • Antioxidants such as Coenzyme Q10, Vitamins A, C, E,

  • Peptides

  • Skin-lightening agents like Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) and Liquorice Extract

  • Sunscreens

  • Botanicals like Green Tea Extract, Grape Seed Extract, Aloe Vera, Witch Hazel, and Allantoin.

Should I be Using Cosmeceuticals?

Yes. As a cosmeceutical brand, we believe you should. [No real surprises there.] We believe that cosmeceutical skincare is essentially for any skin type wanting to see a change in your skin. And there is a cosmeceutical for every skin type including:
